The New Year is here. As a personal trainer who has been in the fitness industry for the last 15 years, I have seen many trends come and go. Here is my impression of what’s hot in fitness in 2013. Crossfit is doing well and popular as ever. Seems boot camp, crossfit, and P90x have sort of morphed into an MMA-like trend of high intensity functional strength training and fitness conditioning. Yoga is as popular as ever although I hear less about Pilates than I use to. Powerlifting seems to be having an upswing in popularity at my gym. In the competition scene womens figure is very popular and a new type of mens competition, “Physique” is getting a foot hold. Not sure what the criteria is, maybe a less extreme version of mens bodybuilding. I don’t see nearly as many kettlebells as I did a few years ago which is a shame because they are a great training tool. We still have BOSU balls and swiss balls but I hardly ever see anyone use them anymore. Guess they are off of the “cool” list.
